M243. Iron Tsuba Papered to Hoan
M243. Hoan tsuba. 7.1 x 7.2 x .5 cm. The nakago hitsu-ana is .9 x 2.7 cm. Iron plate very finely carved with recesses in a shape I can’t remember the name of, 3 covered in gold and 5 in silver on the front and all 8 in silver on the back. One of the ryo-hitsu is plugged with gold. This tsuba comes with a paper from the NTHK, dated 2004 and giving it to Kodai (later generation) Hoan. Smiths of the Hoan School worked throughout the Edo period in Kii Province; they did nice work. Condition is excellent. $1,175.
