J141.  Iron tsuba with gold nunome, signed Hiroiye.  7.2 x 7.6 x .5 cm.  The nakago hitsu-ana is .9 x 2.7 cm.  According to the consignor, this is work from Hizen or Nagasaki (strong foreign influence). He says, “Hirado Hiroie Tsuba. Listed in Haynes Index (Addendum #1. H 01315.A) Also listed in Hirado no Tou to Tsuba, vol. II, p 343, top. Late Edo period. Hirado Island off the northwest coast of Kyushu was a portal for foreign commerce, which continued to trade with Korea during the Edo period. The Kunishige school is its most famous group of carvers. This guard is decorated with an abstract floral design, with Chinese-style damascening (nunome-zogan) made famous in Japan by the Jakushi school.”
