J124. Namban Tsuba, Chinese Export
J124. A consigned Namban tsuba, thought by its owner to be a Japanese copy of a Qing export guard. 6.7 x 7.3 x .4 cm at the rim. The nakago hitsu-ana is.7 x 2.8 cm. At first glance one might wonder if this is a cast guard but definitely not so. A Samurai warrior riding a dragon takes on an Oni at the top of the front; another pair battle at the bottom of the back. More Samurai and Oni, an extra dragon, and what may be a stupa are included also. The sun and moon put in an appearance on the front’s seppa-dai. What more could one want? Condition is excellent. I like this more everytime I look at it. $375.
