J117. Namban Tsuba, Gold Nunome Dragon
J117. Namban tsuba consigned to my site. 7.4 x 7.5 x .45 cm. The nakago hitsu-ana is .7 x 2.7 cm (.9 cm at the middle). This tsuba’s owner conjectures that it resembles a piece from monsoon Asia but the precise carving and nunome gilding suggests a Japanese made piece in the former style. The unusual nakago hitsu-ana would have been made to accomodate differing tang systems. The kotsuka hitsu-ana (on the left in my 1st picture) is a separate piece of metal set into the plate. $345.
