C256. Interesting One Sided Iron Tsuba

$275.00

C256.  Iron tsuba finished one side only.  7.4 x 7.7 x .4 cm at the raised rim.  The nakago hitsu-ana is.7 x 2.7 cm.  The finished side is a raised relief carved dragon with gold nunome highlights on a stippled background.  A pair of udenuki-ana at the bottom are lined with silver.  The back side is unfinished.  According to the consignor, who showed this tsuba to and was told by Robert Haynes, in late Edo, kodogu making was an organized business, with numerous schools and workshops.  Before an apprentice was allowed to strike out on his own he had to make a graduation piece to prove his skill, and that piece, like this tsuba, needed to be finished one side only.  This is the first I’ve ever seen.

Very nice work; I’m sure the smith went on to produce many 2 sided tsuba.  $275.
