Sori: 1.5 cm.

Saki Haba: 2.2 cm.

Saki Kasane: .5 cm.

The hada is ko itame tending towards masame. The hamon is a bright nioi-guchi covered in fine ko-nie: complex variations of choji with sunagashi, kinsuji, nijuba, yo and other tempered areas above the yakiba, and what must be utsuri (not often seen on blades of this time, I think). The boshi is shallow undualtions ending in o-maru with a short kaeri, and it is swept. The blade comes mounted in shirasaya that is somewhat atypical (possibly not made in Japan) but otherwise in good condition, and with a brass habaki. Except for one small (about 7 mm long) and tight ware’ (see my last blade picture) the blade is flawless and in polish.

Kumabe Tadatoshi was born in Taisho 2 (1913). He was a Rikugun Jumei Tosho, for which he had to pass tests given by the Japanese Army and which allowed him to use the star stamp. Also, he was a Meiyo Sosho member of the Kokuho’in Kai, he was awarded a gold medal in a war era sword making competition, and he won the Nyusen award 5 times (information gleened from The Nihonto Message Board). This sword is spectacular and possibly underpriced (I’m getting weak in my old age). I think you’ll be pleased. 2 pounds, 11 ounces. $1,600.
