K3. O-Tanto Papered to Soshu Hirotsugu

$1,750.00

K3. Mumei O-tanto (sunnobi tanto) papered Hozon by the NBTHK (2009) to Soshu Hirotsugu

Nagasa: 14 5/16″ 36.3 cm.

Sori: .6 cm.

Moto haba: 3 cm.

Moto kasane: .5 cm.

Nakago nagasa: 3 7/8″ 9.7 cm.

Overall in shira-saya: 22″ 56.3 cm.

Itame mixed with mokume worked in bright ji-nie. There is one short ware’ (coarse grain) above the habaki on the ura. The hamon starts with suguba worked in gentle notare, becomes gunome midare with large undulations in height, and when it gets to the boshi all hell breaks loose: up and down and ko-maru at the tip followed by a kaeri to match that flows half way back down the blade (classic Soshu hitatsura). Sunagashi everywhere, all of it being covered in ko-nie. Copper habaki and a well made shira-saya in great condition.

There were as many as 8 Hirotsugu working in Soshu in the Muromachi Period; the paper doesn’t specify which this is and I don’t know either. This is a very nice, active tanto (ko-wakizashi) in excellent condition and in polish. Good Soshu work is not easy to find; this shouldn’t be here long. 1 pound, 5 ounces. $1,750.
