B769. Legend in Japanese Art by Joly with index
B769. Legend in Japanese Art by Henry L. Joly. 1967. Hardbound with dust jacket, 8 1/2 x 11 1/2", 623 pages in English, 16 color plates, over 500 black & white photos, and a very thorough text. This is a description of historical episodes, legendary characters, folk-lore myths, and religious symbolism as they are represented in Japanese art. A great reference to explain all the myriad stories that make their way onto our swords (carvings) and kodogu. Condition is excellent; other than a small sticker on the back side of the dust jacket all is fine.
A great book but it has no index, which makes it difficult to use. Included with the book is another book: People, Places and Things in Henri Joly's Legend in Japanese Art. 1978. Hardbound with a dust jacket, 6 x 9 1/4", 217 pages. This is an extensive index to the larger book. Other than a couple dings to the jacket the book is like new.
7 pounds, 6 ounces. $125 for both books.
