B491. Japanese Swordsmiths Vol. 1 & 2 by Hawley, With Supplement #3
B491. Japanese Swordsmiths by W. M. Hawley. Volume 1: 1966, volume 2: 1967. Hardbound, 5 3/4 x 8 1/4", 756 pages total in English. Supplement #3: Japanese Swordsmiths Volume 2. 400 Additional Names, 15 pages. These books were Mr. Hawley's 1st to attempt a list of all Japanese swordsmiths through history. I think between the 2 volumes you get about 10,000 smiths, catching all the important and not so important ones. Many collectors have the 2 volume set as well as the much larger Japanese Swordsmiths Revised (see listing B711) because their smaller size makes them easy to carry at shows. The Supplement #3 is incredibly scarce, quite difficult to find. I think this is only the 2nd time I've had a copy.
Other than the list of smiths, with signatures in both Japanese and English, dates, provinces, and relative point value, the books give you tons of information in charts, drawings, and lists (including indexes to the 1st 17 editions of Juyo Token Nado Zufu by the NBTHK).
Except for some foxing of the outside edges of the page blocks and a tiny bit of small writing inside, conditions of all 3 volumes are excellent. 2 pounds, 7 ounces. $295.
